🌿 CHAPTER 11 — Identity After Caring

Who am I now?

It’s a question many carers ask in the months after their loved one dies.

During the caring years, your identity becomes fixed:

  • protector

  • organiser

  • nurse

  • companion

  • advocate

  • emotional anchor

  • keeper of memories

And then suddenly, that role is gone.

Rebuilding identity is slow and uneven.

For me, it began with walking.

Then writing.

Then reconnecting with my sons.

Then rediscovering interests I had set aside.

If you are in this stage:

please give yourself time.

Your identity hasn’t vanished—

it is simply rearranging itself.
